The Shanena canal was damaged and nonfunctional when under ISIS control. The Raqqah Civil Council, using local labor and coalition funds, repaired and restored the canal allowing water to flow for irrigation and to water pumping stations that provide drinking water to the many villages along its route, Shanena, Syria, April 7, 2018. Since the defeat of ISIS in Raqqah last year, the Coalition supports the RCC’s ability to restore critical infrastructure and services throughout the city and surrounding villages.
