WALTER REED ARMY MEDICAL CENTER, WASHINGTON, District of Columbia -- Sgt. Stephen M. Smith, the armory maintenance chief for 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, walks with a cane during physical therapy as he gets used to his new prosthetic leg. Smith spent 11 months recovering at the center after losing his lower leg to an injury he sustained in Ramadi, Iraq, in 2006, while serving as a machine gunner on a dismounted foot patrol with 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment.
