SASEBO, Japan (April 11, 2018) Sailors assigned to the submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) deck department operate a rigid-hull inflatable boat during a training evolution. Land is currently deployed as an expeditionary submarine tender conducting coordinated tended moorings and afloat maintenance. Land and USS Frank Cable (AS 40), the U.S. Navy’s only two submarine tenders, both homeported in Apra Harbor, Guam, provide maintenance, hotel services and logistical support to submarines and surface ships in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operation.
