Kaliana, 5-years-old, and McKinley, 7-year-old, children of Master Sgt. Joe and Jenna Herrera, pause for a moment while in the hospital recently. Kaliana has Spina Bifida, a defect that involves the incomplete development of the spinal cord. Kaliana has endured five surgeries thus far with Sgt. Herrera having left Afghanistan two times on emergency leave to support his family. Herrera is a helicopter crew chief with the 440th Air Expeditionary Advisory Squadron.
