JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (February 16, 2018) Capt. Michael Sullivan, a pediatrician on Naval Hospital Jacksonville’s Medical Home Port Purple Team, monitors an infant’s heart during a check-up. Since March 3, 1871, the Navy Medical Corps has continued the proud tradition of the "Ship's Surgeon," who was part of the ship's crew since the establishment of the Navy in 1775. Navy physicians have served in multiple specialties while aboard Navy ships at sea, in aviation and undersea medicine, with Marines in field hospitals, and on humanitarian and disaster relief missions.
