A religious ceremony is taking place inside a rustic wooden chapel or church with exposed beam ceilings. A robed officiant, likely an Orthodox Christian priest, is performing a liturgical rite at a candlelit altar while a congregation of civilians and military personnel in camouflage uniforms stands observing. The dim, candlelit atmosphere and Orthodox iconography suggest this is an Eastern Orthodox Christian service.

Capt. Sean Levine, chaplain, 117th Infantry Battalion, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, leads a group of coalition service members and civilian contractors in prayer during an Eastern Orthodox observance of Easter or Pascha (a Christian version of Passover) at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, April 23. As Levine swings the censer it sends up plumes of smoke that represent the path of prayer rising. The ceremony was an abridged version of a typical Eastern Orthodox service which can run up to eight hours in length. This ceremony began at 11:30 p.m. and lasted until 245 a.m.
