PACIFIC OCEAN (Oct. 21, 2017) Boatswain’s Mate Seaman Javier Lopezlazo, assigned to Assault Craft Unit (ACU) 5, directs Gunnery Sgt. Richard Sunquist, assigned to Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron (VMX) 1, as he on-loads a Utility Task Vehicle to a Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) in preparation for Dawn Blitz 2017operations. Dawn Blitz is a scenario-driven exercise designed to train and integrate Navy and Marine Corps units by providing a robust training environment where forces plan and execute an amphibious assault, engage in live-fire events, and establish expeditionary advanced bases in a land and maritime threat environment to improve naval amphibious core competencies.
