A view of the plume shortly after the fire took off on the Eagle Creek Trail in the Columbia River Gorge near Portland, Ore, on Sept. 2, 2017. Helicopters buzzed over heads to dump water on the fire, as around 150 people hunkered down on the Punchbowl Falls rocky beach. Tech. Sgt.
