A monument is a top the Gifu for the nearly 500 Imperial Japanese Army soldier force known as Oka Force on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, on Aug. 6, 2017. IJA soldiers commanded by Col. Akinosuka Oka named the Gifu after a prefecture in Japan. It was the Soldiers of 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, who was tasked to reduce the nearly 500 strong Japanese position backed by 40 bunkers and more than 40 heavy weapons in January 1943.
