A 3-year-old Kaitlin Rayburn models the helmet of her dad, Tom Rayburn, a retired lieutenant colonel, in the family’s home in Fort Lewis, Wash., around 1991. Now-Capt. Kaitlin Whitmore, commander of Charlie Company, 215th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, was encouraged by her dad to give ROTC a try in college.
