Gen. James F. Amos, 35th commandant of the Marine Corps, speaks to the Marines and sailors of 1st Battalion, 8th Marines about the history and significance of the Purple Heart medal during an award ceremony held in Musa Qal'eh, Dec. 25. During the ceremony, Amos awarded seven Marines with the Purple Heart and told each of them to be proud to wear such a distinguished award. Amos explained that the Purple Heart is a medal awarded in the name of the President and is the oldest decoration to be awarded to U.S. service members. Following the ceremony, Amos spoke to the battalion saying he came to see the Marines on Christmas day, because there is no place he'd rather be than with the Marines of 1st Battalion, 8th Marines.
