170602-N-UJ980-174 SAN DIEGO (June 2, 2017) Commander, Navy Medicine West (NMW), Rear Adm. Paul D. Pearigen, tours the Warfighter Performance Laboratory at the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC). Researchers discuss current environmental physiology initiatives with Pearigen, including a project reevaluating the Physiological Heat Exposure Limits (PHEL Curves). PHEL Curves provide guidance on the amount of time personnel may safely remain in specific workspaces, known as “stay time.” Aboard ships, PHEL Curves are calculated by the Automated Heat Stress System, which was developed by NHRC in 1997 and is currently deployed aboard more than 60 Navy ships.
