Command Sgt. Maj. Jose Vega receives the Bronze Star Medal with Valor from Lt. Gen. Benjamin Freakley at a ceremony in the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, headquarters building on Fort Knox, Ky., Wednesday, Oct. 6. Vega received the award for his heroic action in Afghanistan in 2006 when he put his own life on the line to forge a path through 400 meters of an active minefield in order to evacuate five wounded Soldiers.
