Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command Oscar Team members arrive at one of the government offices of Tarawa, Republic of Kiribati on Aug. 11 to receive remains of U.S. Marines from the Battle of Tarawa, which took place in Nov. of 1943 during WWII. 1,113 Marines assigned to the 2nd Marine Division were killed and 2,290 were wounded. The JPAC team is responsible for recovering the remains of fallen or missing military members from past conflicts that the U. S. has been involved in.
