An F/A-18E Super Hornet assigned to the “Royal Maces” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 27 launches across the flight deck of the Navy's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76). The steam-powered catapult can launch an aircraft from zero to approximately 170 miles per hour in less than three seconds.
