160922-N-WA993-040 PHILIPPINE SEA (Sept. 22, 2016) Airman Ashley Morrison, from Meridian, Mississippi, writes notes on a window in Primary Flight Control while standing the aft-spotter watch aboard the Navy's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76). The aft-spotter watch is responsible for identifying aircraft before landing, so the arresting wire can be adjusted for the specific weight of the aircraft. Ronald Reagan is participating in Exercise Valiant Shield 2016, a biennial, U.S.-only field-training exercise with a focus on integration of joint training among U.S. forces. This training enables real-world proficiency in sustaining joint forces through detecting, locating, tracking and engaging units at sea, in the air, on land and in cyberspace in response to a range of mission areas.
