Garry Newkirk tries on a new pair of boots at the East Bay Stand Down on Sept. 16, 2016, in Pleasanton, California. Newkirk, a former Navy corpsman and Vietnam Veteran, was one of several hundred veterans to receive life-care services at the Bay Area homeless veteran outreach event from Sept. 15-18. "I'm trying to say 'thank you' for your patience," Newkirk told the volunteer provding him with new boots. "It almost makes up for all the times I was spit on."
