U.S. Air Force Capt. Ash Smith, 156th Airlift Squadron, attaches canopy poles to a 20-man lift raft to erect a canopy to prevent sun exposure during a water survival refresher course held at Camp John J. Barnhardt, New London, N.C., Sept. 10, 2016. Hands-on familiarity with all of the emergency equipment kept on the C-130 Hercules aircraft is essential to build muscle memory in times of crisis. The course is an annual requirement which covers water survival equipment and procedures to prepare aircrew members for parachuting into water or an aircraft incident over water.
