Lance Cpl. Ghukas Vardanyan storms the beaches of Motutapu Island, Tonga, July 27, 2016, during a multi-national, bilateral exercise, between the U.S. and Tonga, designed to increase interoperability and relations as part of Task Force Koa Moana’s deployment in the Asia-Pacific region. The service members utilized combat rubber raiding crafts to operationalize USNS Sacagawea (T-AKE 2), conduct beach insertions and transport supplies and personnel from ship to shore. Vardanyan, from Glendale, California, is an infantryman with Task Force Koa Moana and is originally assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force.
