A member of the Ho Chunk Nation's Thundercloud Singers presents newly promoted Brig. Gen. Joane Mathews with a blanket before an honor song is performed during a formal ceremony April 4 in the Senate Chamber of the state capitol building. Mathews — the first Native American female to become a general officer in the entire Army National Guard — will serve as the assistant adjutant general for readiness and training. Mathews’ daughters Shannon and Lindsey pinned on her shoulder bars while her husband Ric pinned the star on her beret as Gov. Scott Walker read the promotion orders. Walker then administered the oath of office to Mathews. Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs photo by Vaughn R. Larson
