Gov. Scott Walker administers the oath of office to newly promoted Brig. Gen. Joane Mathews as her husband Ric holds her Bible during a formal ceremony April 4 in the Senate Chamber of the state capitol building. Mathews — the first Native American female to become a general officer in the entire Army National Guard — will serve as the assistant adjutant general for readiness and training. Mathews’ daughters Shannon and Lindsey pinned on her shoulder bars while Ric pinned the star on her beret as Walker read the promotion orders.
