A tree smolders at the conclusion of a controlled burn at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., Feb. 4, 2016. The 2nd Civil Engineer Squadron project reduced excess vegetation which increased the temperature of the soil, expediting blossoming of spring foliage, and provided local wildlife with renewed sources of nourishment. Burned vegetation can smolder for days after the conclusion of a controlled burn. (U.S. Air Force photo/Airman 1st Class Mozer O. Da Cunha)
