A drill instructor of Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, inspects a recruit’s gear before his fight during the Pugil Sticks III event at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Dec. 29. Recruits were given protective gear such as a helmet, groin protector and flak jacket for safety. Annually, more than 17,000 males recruited from the Western Recruiting Region are trained at MCRD San Diego. Charlie Company is scheduled to graduate Jan. 22.
