U.S. Marine Maj. Michelle Macandar carries the guidon past the lap-count line during the First to Fight 240 Relay at Resolute Support Headquarters, Kabul, Afghanistan, commemorating the 240th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps. Australian army Sgt. Tom Saxby runs along side Macandar while U.S. Marine Brig. Gen. David W. Maxwell, Resolute Support deputy chief of staff for support, and an unidentified Marine cheers them on. It just happened to be Macandar's birthday too. The Marines at Resolute Support and the adjacent U.S. Embassy took turns carrying the guidon for 240 laps around the 26-acre compound. Coalition partners and members of the other U.S. services assigned to this NATO camp ran in support. When the 240th lap was completed after about 14 hours the guidon had covered 96 miles through a cold, drizzling rain. Macander is a native of Clifton Park, N.Y.
