    U.S. Army Cpl. Casey Liffrig, of Pinehurst, N.C., scans the hills surrounding the Waterpur valley, as insurgent fighters rain down bullets on his position, during a three-hour firefight with militant forces in Afghanistan's Kunar province, Nov. 3. Liffrig, and fellow members of Company C, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, have been battling militant fighters since arriving in Afghanistan last June.
