A U.S. Army soldier in ACU (Army Combat Uniform) digital camouflage is firing a shotgun at what appears to be a military firing range. A spent shell casing is visibly ejecting from the weapon. The soldier is wearing hearing protection, sunglasses, and a tan baseball cap with a U.S. flag patch.

Sgt. John Hyland fires a World War II Sterling L2A3 (Mark 4) submachine gun, Oct. 16, at a range on Victory Base Complex in Baghdad. The Charlotte, N.C., native suffered extensive pelvic and back injuries and lost his left leg below the knee in an improved explosive device attack, Sept. 11, 2007. He participated in Operation Proper Exit Oct. 11 to 17, a program that affords wounded combat veterans a chance to return to the places they served and were injured while serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
