A truck loaded with more than 3,000 pounds of canned goods donated by federal employees waits to be unpacked by St. George Catholic Church volunteers in Waimanalo July 24, 2015. The canned goods come from federal employees who have donated to Feds Feed Families, a Department of Agriculture program where federal employees donate non-perishable goods to food banks and charities. Launched in 2009, Feds Feed Families was designed to help food banks and pantries stay stocked during summer months when they traditionally see a decrease in donations and an increase in need. The campaign began on July 15 and will conclude on October 2, 2015. St. George Catholic Church distributes the food through their Feed the Hungry program, which occurs on the last Saturday of every month. Events like this support Marine Corps Base Hawaii’s mission to provide facilities, programs and services in direct support of units, individuals and families in order to enhance and sustain combat readiness for all operating forces and tenant organizations aboard the installation.
