Vivianne Wersel, center, chair of the Government Relations Committee for the Gold Star Wives of America, Inc., testifies before the House Committee on Veterans Affairs? subcommittee on disability compensation and memorial affairs Sept. 24, 2009, in Washington. Wersel is the widow of Marine Corps Lt. Col. Richard Wersel, who died of heart complications one week after redeploying from Iraq in February 2005. Since, Wersel have been very active in advocating the need for improved benefits for survivors of fallen service members.
