Maj. Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, talks with paratroopers standing in formation after he awarded Purple Heart Medals to three paratroopers, Staff Sgt. Whitney Bernson, Sgt. David Vogel and Spc. William Oligher from Company D, 3rd Battalion, 509th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Sept. 23, during a ceremony on Forward Operating Base Salerno located in the Khost province of eastern Afghanistan, for injuries they received when their vehicle was stuck by an improvised explosive device in March 2009. Additionally, Vogel received a second Purple Heart Medal for a separate incident were he was struck in the face by enemy small arms fire.
