Paratroopers, Staff Sgt. Whitney Bernson, Sgt. David Vogel and Spc. William Oligher from Company D, 3rd Battalion, 509th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Sept. 23, stand in formation during a ceremony on Forward Operating Base Salerno located in the Khost province of eastern Afghanistan, for injuries they received when their vehicle was stuck by an improvised explosive device in March 2009. Additionally, Vogel received a second Purple Heart Medal for a separate incident were he was struck in the face by enemy small arms fire.
