Senior Airman Ashley V. Chytraus, 108th Wing, holds a turnbuckle elbow brace at her home in New Jersey, June 10, 2015. Chytraus, a New Jersey Air National Guard KC-135R Stratotanker crew chief, was in a motorcycle accident June 21, 2014. The collision broke two vertebrae in Chytraus’s neck, crushed her hand, mangled the quadriceps tendon in her leg, forced two splintered ribs into her liver and fractured her elbow. As it healed, her arm locked at a 90-degree angle and remained that way for nearly six months. In addition, she died while being medevaced to the hospital. 358 days later, she passed all portions of the Air Force Physical Fitness Test and received an excellent.
