From left, Rct. Kira M. Long, Platoon 4021, Rct. Justine L. Jackson, Platoon 4020, Rct. Qi Qi, Platoon 4021, and Rct. Mikella E. Hampel, Platoon 4020, all with Oscar Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, discuss how to search for a specific set of coordinates during land navigation practice May 26, 2015, on Parris Island, S.C. This practical application training ensures the recruits know how to navigate using only a map and compass in case electronic navigation should fail. Long, 18, from Ankeny, Iowa; Jackson, 21, from Ann Arbor, Mich.; Qi, 19, from Queens, N.Y.; and Hampel, 24, from Coldbrook, N.Y., are scheduled to graduate June 19, 2015. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Pfc. Vanessa Austin)
