From left, Rct. Luis E. Alberto, Rct. Derrick L. Martin, and Rct. Lorenzo O. Harper, Platoon 3045, Kilo Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, search for specific points during land navigation practice May 26, 2015, on Parris Island, S.C. This practical application exercise ensures recruits know how to navigate using only a map and compass. Alberto, 19, from Hasbrouck, N.J.; Martin, 20, from Norwalk, Ohio; and Harper, 20, from Cleveland, are scheduled to graduate June 19, 2015. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Pfc. Vanessa Austin)
