Petty Officer Third Class Scott Cummings, a corpsman with 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, talks about his friendship with Lance Cpl. Jacob Matthews who was a rifleman with the battalion and Chester, Md., native during a memorial service aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C., April 24, 2015. Matthews died due to injuries sustained in a single-vehicle accident in the city of Jacksonville, N.C., April 10, 2015. “He saw me when I was at my worst and I stood by him when he was having [a hard time]. We always had each other’s back. He was also a joker and he had a way of making everyone cry from laughter; I’ve never laughed as hard as the times I spent with Jacob,” Cummings said.
