Colorado National Guard Soldiers of the Maneuver Area Training Equipment Site 64 (MATES64) extract a mock injured snowshoer from a ravine in Routt National Forest, near Steamboat Springs, Colo., Jan. 28, 2015. The Soldiers planned and completed the mission after receiving coordinates of the snowshoers last know whereabouts from cell phone data. The real-life scenario included unplanned problems like loss of winch power and broken snowshoe straps. Thirty-nine Soldiers from Colorado's Front Range gained experience and knowledge in deep snow driving, winch recovery, wide-area search, cold weather survival and first aid during the training on approximately 12,000 acres Jan. 26 to 29, 2015. Soldiers gained insights during the training about how to improve future rescue through after-action reviews that identified successes and limitations of each event. Quick and efficient response through leadership, navigation, cooperation and planning is the trainings primary objective. Ten small unit support vehicles (SUSV) are owned and maintained by the Colorado National Guard. The annual training is an integral part of CONG's domestic emergency preparedness. Snow response training means CONG is always ready, always there to meet the needs of Colorado and surrounding states. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Sgt. Manda Walters/Released)
