U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Eliot Fiashi and his partner Meky assigned to the Military Working Dog Unit at Camp Lemonier, locate a training explosive during their explosive detection certification on April 14. Petty Officer Fiashi and Meky are one of the MWD teams assigned to Camp Lemonier used for explosive/narcotic detection as well as security patrols. The MWD unit uses training aids which mimic distinct bomb's odor and are a significant part of the certification process for working dog teams. The service members of Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa, headquartered in Djibouti, employ an indirect approach to counter violent extremism. Through a strategy of cooperative conflict prevention the task force helps build the internal capacities of countries at risk to prevail against extremists exploiting instability.
