Sgt. Peter Pierson currently serves as a Marine Corps drill instructor with Fox Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. Pierson joined the Marine Corps in May 2002 and became a drill instructor in December 2013. “About a year ago, I was working for an outstanding staff sergeant,” said Pierson, a 30-year-old native of Tucson, Ariz. “He was always on point, and when I asked what motivated him to be this way, he said it was being a drill instructor. He encouraged me to become a drill instructor, to not only make myself a better Marine but also instill what I have to men hoping to be Marines.” About 600 Marine Corps drill instructors shape the approximately 20,000 recruits who come to Parris Island annually into basic United States Marines. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Vaniah Temple)
