Staff Sgt. Jason Varchulik, a staff noncommissioned officer at the office of the commander of Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, raises a U.S. flag at the building known as "Taliban's Last Stand," Aug. 27, 2014. The building is significant, according to Varchulik, because it was "the last known defensive fighting position of the Taliban" in Kandahar when U.S. Forces captured the airfield in 2001, and served as the headquarters of COMKAF until 2013.
