Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire listens intently during a brief given by Col. Ronald Kapral, the commander of the 81st Brigade Combat Team, Washington Army National Guard, Jan. 7, at Camp Ramadi, Iraq. Kapral discussed issues such as 81st BCT missions, Soldier care, retention and finances. "As long as the National Guard is going to continue to serve [here], continue to fight, we have to ask the federal government and the military to take care of our Soldiers," said Kapral. Gregoire traveled to Baghdad, Ramadi and Balad during her two-day trip to Iraq to see Washington Soldiers. Approximately 2,400 members of the Washington Army National Guard are deployed to various bases across Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
