Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island

Rct. Bruce Royal Jr., Platoon 2048, Fox Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, receives a high-and-tight haircut June 24, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. By nearing the end of recruit training, the young men earned the privilege of looking more like Marines and less like recruits. Getting this haircut, unlike the bald heads they had before, is a symbol of hard work and progression through training. Royal, 20, from Statesboro, Ga., is scheduled to graduate July 3, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Vaniah Temple)
