Maj. Gen. Michael Shields, commander of U.S. Army Alaska, joined Col. Matthew McFarlane, commanding officer of the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, and the rest of the Spartan Brigade on a five-mile run as Sparta Week officially started June 17, 2014 at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.
