U.S. Navy Capt. Herbert L. Griffin, top, and Master Chief Petty Officer Alfredo Chavez leave memorabilia on a monument at the summit of Mount Suribachi during a professional military education tour April 11 on Iwo To, Japan. Leaving personal memorabilia demonstrates the connection to their fallen comrades who fought on the island nearly seven decades ago. The summit is where photographer Joe Rosenthal's famous photograph of five Marines and a U.S. Navy corpsman raising the American flag took place. Griffin is the command chaplain with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 1, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, and Chavez is the 1st MAW command master chief.
