Rct. Antonio Brown Jr., Platoon 1016, Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, treads water during his basic water survival assessment Feb. 3, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. During this portion of the qualification, recruits must demonstrate they can remain above water for four minutes by treading water, floating or using their utility blouse as a makeshift floatation device. Every recruit must pass the swim assessment to graduate, for they may need these skills if they become Marines. Brown, an 18-year-old Atlanta native, is scheduled to graduate April 4, 2014.
