The Newport, R.I., chief petty officer selectees' pennant flies from the yardarm of the South Dakota class battleship, USS Massachusetts (BB-59), in Fall River, Mass., during a community relations project. Eight CPO selectees from U.S. Naval War College, Naval Station Newport, and Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, R.I., participated in the COMREL project, which served as an opportunity to contribute towards the preservation and restoration of the battleship. The Massachusetts, affectionately nicknamed Big Mamie by its crew, currently sits moored pierside at Battleship Cove in Fall River, Mass., and serves as a museum ship for the Massachusetts Memorial Committee.
