With an energy drink in hand, Pfc. Daniel Fancett, 18, grabs a plate of pizza inside the Marine Corps Exchange on Parris Island, S.C., on Dec. 15, 2013. Fancett, Platoon 1100, Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, and his fellow Marines could finally indulge in the foods they had been denied since beginning training. New Marines could also make phone calls home, visit the museum and movie theater and purchase items at the base's exchange. On-base liberty was implemented into recruit training in 1996 in conjunction with Marine Week, the time spent between the Crucible and graduation when new Marines adjust to new responsibilities. Fancett, an 18-year-old native of New Hartford, N.Y., is scheduled to graduate Dec. 20, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
