Pvt. Courtney Martinez, makes a purchase at the Marine Corps Exchange on Parris Island, S.C., during her on-base liberty Dec. 15, 2013. New Marines such as Martinez, Platoon 4043, Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, used this time to make phone calls, purchase wristwatches and indulge in various activities that had been off limits for the previous 12 weeks, such as visiting the base's exchange and movie theater. In recruit training, liberty is a privilege granted to new Marines only after they complete the Crucible. On-base liberty was implemented into recruit training in 1996 in conjunction with Marine Week, the time spent between the Crucible and graduation when new Marines adjust to new responsibilities. Martinez, 19, from Denver, is scheduled to graduate Dec. 20, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis)
