Pvt. Shawna Hamm, Platoon 4042, Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, reviews snack options in the Marine Corps Exchange on Parris Island, S.C., during on-base liberty Dec. 15, 2013. Throughout training, the Marines' meals are strictly scheduled. On-base liberty was implemented into recruit training in 1996 in conjunction with Marine Week, the time spent between the Crucible and graduation when new Marines adjust to new responsibilities. Hamm, an 18-year-old native of Springfield, Ill., is scheduled to graduate Dec. 20, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
