Crew members aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay, a 140-foot ice-breaking tug homeported in Detroit, clear the buoy deck of ice with sledgehammers, scrapers, a fire hose and apply ice melt to the deck of the barge before beginning buoy operations during Operation Fall Retrieve in Lake Erie, Dec. 7, 2013. During the winter months, lake spray freezes almost instantly on the decks of the cutter making operations extremely dangerous. (U.S. Coast Guard photo by Petty Officer 1st Class Dwayne Matthews)
