Soldiers of the Massachusetts Army National Guard and members of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 1 are briefed before heading to the site of a simulated collapsed building during Maine's Vigilant Guard Exercise on Nov. 6. As part of the ongoing exercise to test emergency preparedness, federal, state, and international search and rescue units joined forces to extract and medically treat casualties on the grounds of Brunswick Landing. Over the next two days, crews across the state will respond to simulated natural and man-made disaster scenarios in order to be better prepared for a real, large-scale incident.
