    Rear Adm. Thomas H Bond, Jr., Director of Cyberspace Operations, North American Aerospace Defense Command / U.S. Northern Command, presents the American flag to Mrs. Patricia Carpenter, wife of U.S. Navy Cmdr. Malcolm Scott Carpenter, retired, at his funeral at St. John's Episcopal Church, Boulder, Colo. Carpenter, 88, died Oct. 10, at Denver Hospice following complications from a recent stroke. Selected as one of the original Mercury Seven on April 9, 1959, Carpenter was the fourth U.S. astronaut to fly into space. Piloting the second American manned orbital flight on May 24, 1962, Carpenter flew his Aurora 7 spacecraft through three revolutions of the earth, reaching a maximum altitude of 164 miles. The spacecraft landed in the Atlantic Ocean about 1,000 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral after 4 hours and 54 minutes of flight time.
